And today we’re gonna have some pronunciation out here. This topic and these words were suggested by some of you last month and I believe it’s a great topic to come and talk, teach and share some little tricks with you guys. You all know how picky I am with the pronunciation but at the same time guys, I say: DON’T LET YOUR DOUBT KILL YOUR ACTIONS! You’d better say something and then correct it, then don’t say anything ok? Practice makes perfect. I’ve improved a lot my pronunciation since I got in the US and I’m not going to settle ‘till it’s perfect and that’s what you guys should do. If you’re learning English online, by yourself or with a teacher helping you, take every single opportunity to speak ok?
What I brought you today will help you in some situations when you use your speaking: WORDS THAT ARE EASILY MISPRONOUNCED so be careful with them and let’s get it started:
- The first one is BEACH X BITCH. A beach /biiiitch/ – it’s an /iiii/ sound ok? BEACH is a place where you see lots of sand and the sea. It’s one of the most visited places during the summer, women wear bikinis, friends just play volleyball or soccer, some people go surfing. So again that’s the BEACH.
A bitch /bêtch/ – and notice the pronunciation now changes a little, it’s an /ê/ sound. There’s an “i” in the word but the pronunciation is “ê” ok? BITCH /bêtch/.
So again, bitch is a very offensive way to call a woman, especially when you’re pissed off, mad, angry. It’s never used for men ok? Just women, and women you don’t like at all. It’s a rude and again, offensive way to call someone like that or to refer to a woman like that for example: “OMG she’s a real bitch” or “Why is that bitch calling you?”
BUT “BITCH” can also be used in other situations: when you have a very unpleasant or difficult situation to solve, you can say that that thing is a bitch like, “my computer is a bitch to fix” or “that word is a bitch to spell”
One more situation that we use the word BITCH – and this one I use quite a lot in my daily routine which is the verb TO BITCH – yep there’s a verb TO BITCH and I bet most of you are curious about it ‘cause you’ve probably never heard this verb before, right? LOL Guys, TO BITCH is the same as to complain and make unkind remarks about someone or something. For example: ” He bitched constantly about his old car, but he doesn’t like his new one either.” or “She’s always bitching about me, that’s so annoying!” Add this verb to your list because it’s not offensive (yeah, it is informal ok? By the way very informal) but not offensive but calling a girl a bitch, it is ok?
- Our second group of words today is: SHIT X SHEET and the verb TO CHEAT. I’ll start with the easiest one which is SHEET. We have multiple meanings here. A sheet may be a large piece of cotton, satin or any other fabric that we use to cover the mattress and also as a layer beneath blankets when these are used, of course. For example: I need to buy some new sheets for my bed. And guys, the pronunciation here is /iiii/ – /shiiiit/ ok?
A sheet is also a piece of paper where you can print or write something. A sheet is also another name for a newspaper or periodical. And we can also have a spreadsheet which is an interactive computer application for organization, analysis and storage of data in tabular form like in Microsoft Excel.
Alright, now let’s talk about the word SHIT and just like in the word “BITCH”, here’s gonna be “SHIT”- /ê/ sound – so /SHÊT/ ok? That’s a very common word in English by the way and every time you watch a show or a movie, you’ll hear this word for sure. Well, SHIT basically means feces, excrement… BUT that’s not the meaning we usually have in our daily routine. For example, you tell someone he’s a piece of shit, first of all that’s very offensive and it means it he’s a detestable and worthless person.
You can also say something is a shit and it means it has no value at all, it’s crap, it’s nonsense for example: “Why are you telling me this shit?” / “That movie was total shit” / Why did she give you that shit?
Once again, don’t start saying these things around cause it’s pretty nasty ok? I’m here to teach you not only the word itself but also how they look if you use them everywhere. Be cautious and respectful ok?
And the last one is the verb TO CHEAT and the pronunciation here has a /tchhh/ in the beginning ok? TO CHEAT. The most common meaning here is to be sexually unfaithful to someone: to your wife, husband, boyfriend, girlfriend. And it’s always TO CHEAT ON ok? Like, my neighbor was cheating on his wife, I saw it.
If you practice fraud, you cheat. I mean, you can cheat on a test, at cards… When you violate the rules dishonestly, you know? That’s also TO CHEAT.
So beach, bitch – sheet, shit and cheat! Be careful ok?
Again, that was a suggestion from you guys so keep telling me what you’d like to have here on our English Bites because I’ll be really glad to share useful thing with you all
