Today’s Bite will be very special. I know we all have our goals to accomplish, dreams and plans to achieve but if we want to have something different, we gotta do something different. We’ll never have different results by doing the same old things. And yes, we tend to follow a routine and it’s hard to break out of our comfort zone so that’s why I decided to bring you a very famous story to explain what I’m talking about.
So pay attention to that story – I’m pretty sure you’re gonna like it – It’s called: KILL THE COW!
There was a family who lived in the outskirts of a remote village on a small plot of land. The family owned one cow. Each day they lived from the milk of the cow. If there was little milk, they would not eat well. If there was lots of milk, they would eat well. They depended on that cow to live – the whole family.
On a beautiful fall day, a lone traveler stopped in the village. He was starving and the family shared some milk and food with him. The traveler felt really grateful for that.
He wished he could return the favor and help the family. He didn’t know how to help the family but he really wanted to. He heard that there was a very wise man in the village so he went to this wise man’s home to talk to him:
“I was hungry and the family fed me. I would like to help them. How can I help this family?”
The wise man said “Kill the cow.”
“Kill it? How can that help them? Their lives depend on that cow.”
The wise man repeated “Kill the cow.”
The traveler was nervous about following such strange advice but the reputation of the wise man was something abnormal that he decided to do what he was told… and he killed the cow.
One year later the traveler was in that village again. He noticed new shops and he also saw a new hotel that provided beds and food to the travelers who came to the market.
The traveler entered the hotel. In the reception of the hotel he found the eldest son of the family – the same family who had a cow. The man was standing tall, smiling and happy. The traveler greeted him and asked: “What happened?”.
“We lost our cow. There was no milk so we had nothing to eat or drink. So, we had to get by our own and do something to survive. We started a small market and it grew. After that we decided to open this hotel and thank God, we are having a lot of travelers staying here. Without the milk from our cow, we had to try new things. We had to break out of our comfort zone. It was hard in the beginning but we’ve been working really hard that we’ve thriving more than we expected”
Silently, the traveler reflected on that situation and remembered that wise man’s words: “Kill the cow.”
Awesome story, isn’t it? Now I would like to ask you guys… how’s your cow? Isn’t it time to kill it? Aren’t you too comfortable where you are? Isn’t it time to break out of your comfort zone?
Trying new things is difficult. If it weren’t, breaking out of your comfort zone would be easy and we’d do it all the time. And Living outside your comfort zone is by definition uncomfortable. But the best habit you can foster within yourself is the practice of becoming familiar with discomfort. It’s not easy but your gotta get used to it. Listening to this English Bite every day might not sound very comfortable to you but it will help you improve your listening for sure. Studying English every day might not be something so pleasant and that you feel happy with, but it will bring you closer to what you want.
So think about it and start a plan! How can you kill your cow? Start by doing some small activities to challenge yourself. Make them a new habit in your life.
Next English Bite I’ll bring another story related to the one we had today and I’ll also share some personal tips on how you can stop thinking, planning, saying or just dreaming and start doing. How you can become successful and get your things done.
