“May today’s English Bite begin.
It’s not just a simple verb or any verb…
For the first time, in the history of English Bites…
The scariest, haunted and frightening…
LOL Sorry guys, I had to make a scene.
It’s interesting to see how so many students are absurdly scared of this verb, I mean,
“OMG he’s using the verb to GET so now I’ll never know the meaning of it.”
“It’s impossible to learn this verb since there are 34.678 meanings for this verb.”
First of all. Do you guys remember James Sullivan or Sulley from Monsters Inc? Yep, the bear-like blue-furred male monster with horns, purple spots, razor sharp claws on his hand… The protagonist of Disney/Pixar animated film. So what do monsters do? They scare people. But Sulley is a good-natured monster, he has a good heart. Ok, that’s the same for the verb GET.
Yep, it’s ginormous, lots of phrasal verbs, expressions, meanings… And I do understand your frustration when dealing with this verb, I mean trying to use it or even understand its meaning. So that’s why I am here to help you face this verb and fight for your knowledge.
OMG, I am so drama-queen today. So help me God. LOL
Guys, that’s just an introduction audio about the verb TO GET ok and once a month I’ll bring something specific and related to the verb to get. You guys know my opinion and my methodology. I am not a “learn English fluently in 30 days-person” because we are not robots or machines that we simply add tons of information and voilá – files uploaded successfully.
I’ll bring you lots of content about TO GET but in small doses, so you have time to listen to each one thoroughly, study and memorize naturally in a way you can use it whenever you wish. So, answering the question, WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THE VERB TO GET? It depends what you mean. Today, I’ll teach you just 3 of them and next time, I’ll bring much more, besides phrasal verbs and expressions alright?
1) GET being the same as ARRIVE, REACH A DESTINATION.
- I got home at 9 pm yesterday (I arrived home at 9 pm yesterday)
- She won’t be able to get there on time
- If you get to the restaurant before us, just wait at the bar.
Guys, the preposition that follows GET when you’re going to mention a place is TO alright? GET TO
- Get to the restaurant
- Get to the supermarket
- Get to Chicago
- Get to work
- But Get home (exception)
2) GET as ACQUIRE, BUY, COME INTO THE POSSESSION OF SOMETHING.
- They got a new pet.
- She’s gonna get a new car for her son.
- I got my computer online.
- We went to the grocery store this morning to get some milk
- He stopped on the way to get some fruit.
3) GET being the same as TO RECEIVE A PRESENT or OBTAIN ATTENTION
- His product got some good reviews on the website.
- What would you like to get for your birthday?
- I got a phone call from Bill last night.
- We don’t get much snow here.
Guys again, I know there are many different meanings but for a while I want you to stay with these three ones ok? Next time I’ll bring some more. But don’t avoid using the verb TO GET. It’s really important and used in English. Don’t be afraid of it. In the end, it’s just like Sulley and I’m pretty sure you’ll be best friends forever kkk
